What is the hospitality industry?

The hospitality industry is a broad service-sector which includes business that provide accommodation, food and beverage services, event planning, and travel/tourism. Examples include hotels, restaurants, pubs, cafes, airlines, theme parks, and more. This industry focuses on creating welcoming experiences for guests.

Key skills for working in hospitality

As the hospitality industry covers a wide range of business types, the specific skills and experience needed vary, requiring unique skills for each business type. That being said, there are a number of skills that are key to working in hospitality, no matter the specific business type. These include:

Customer Service and empathy

Anticipating guest needs, maintaining a positive attitude, and handling complaints professionally to create memorable experiences.

Communication

Clear, friendly verbal and non-verbal communication for interacting with guests and collaborating with team members.

Adaptability and flexibility

Ability to work in fast-paced, unpredictable environments, adapting to changing situations, last-minute requests, or staffing issues.

Thinking on your feet to resolve issues (e.g., billing disputes, booking errors) quickly to maintain high standards.

The role is varied, and individuals tend to specialise in an area and must be adaptable and ready to support team members across the business.
