Specialised TA training to tackle SEN skills shortage

The number of pupils with Special Education Needs (SEN) in England is rising year on year. According to the latest figures, There are currently 1.7 million pupils in England with SEN which is an increase of 93,700 pupils since 2024. This figure has been steadily rising over the last 10 years with an increase of over 4% per year since 2021.

While the need for support is high, schools are struggling to keep up with the need due to shrinking budgets and a skills gap for specialised SEN support. How can schools better support their pupils and help their staff gain better SEN skills? This article will propose a solution.

SEN training

The main way to combat a skills shortage is by providing additional training. SEN training is available in a number of different forms, but apprenticeship programmes are some of the most effective options available.

On an apprenticeship programme learners receive formal education while working in a placement. This allows them to gain practical and theoretical skills at the same time, becoming qualified and experienced educators. This also allows the school to have a member of staff supporting their SEN pupils right away filling the support gap.

New SEN talent

While educators at all levels could benefit from additional SEN training, the pressures and time constraints of existing teaching staff could pose a barrier to added learning and responsibility. This is why hiring new talent with the direct purpose of acting as SEN support would help to grow the school’s talent pool and SEN specific skillset while reducing pressure from current staff.
