Results day decisions: making the right choice for your future

August is flying by, and with-it GCSE and A-Level results days are fast approaching. Results day is not just about finding out what grades you’ve received but is also a time for reflection and decision making for the future.

While collage and university choices are at the front of many pupils’ minds, it’s important to consider all options available to you for continuing your studies and starting a career. In this article we will discuss the options available for pupils completing secondary school and collage to help you make an informed decision about your future.

College and Sixth form

This option is often offered as a natural progression to completing secondary school and GCSEs. In this option pupils will continue their academic studies with a stronger focus on particular subjects. Here pupils will study for a final A-Level or BTEC qualification though colleges may offer alternatives such as vocational training and sometimes apprenticeships.

University

University is a continuation from college and sixth form when pupils move to study a specific subject in a higher academic level. University is a good option for pupils who enjoy reading, writing and researching however may not be the right option for pupils who did not enjoy these types of tasks in school. Additionally, university costs tend to be quite high with the current cost of an undergraduate degree being £9,535 per year. Most students will need to take out student loans in order to cover the cost of studying.

Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships are training programmes that combine practical training with studying for a qualification. They come in a variety of subjects and career paths and are available to anyone over the age of 16. Apprenticeships are a great alternative to university and college as they allow learners to gain work experience and a qualification at the same time, helping them to enter the workforce earlier with a wealth of experience.

Apprenticeship training is free, and learners earn a wage while working as part of their apprenticeship programme, making them very appealing to learners as they do not accrue dept while studying.
