How to prepare your pupils for the summer holidays

The end of the academic year can be a challenging time for some pupils. Preparing pupils for the summer holidays is crucial for their continued growth. It ensures they remain engaged and curious. In this article we will discuss how you can support your pupils in the transition to the summer holidays.

Why Summer Holiday Preparation Matters

Summer holiday preparation is essential to prevent learning loss. Pupils often forget academic skills during the long break. A structured summer helps maintain educational momentum. It lays the foundation for the upcoming school year.

Additionally, for some pupils the move from academic year to the summer holidays can have negative impact on their mental health. Pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) may struggle with the transition and change. Additionally, for some pupils who have a difficult homelife 6 weeks away from school can prove difficult.

Preparing your pupils and providing them with support and a plan for the summer break can help their wellbeing.

The three step plan for summer break

A great way to help prepare your pupils is by working with them to plan the next few months. You can support your pupils by creating a three-step plan with them:

End of school year plan

To help the transition feel less jarring, work with your pupils to plan the last few weeks of the academic year. Consider with them what they want to achieve over the next few weeks and what they are most looking forward to.

Over the break plan

Next, work with your pupils to plan the summer holidays. By doing this you can help your pupils get excited for the months ahead, rather than anxious due to the change. This plan is also a great opportunity to work through their learning plan and setting goals that help them stay on track with their learning. These can include reading lists or leaning goals on apps like Duolingo.

Back-to-school plan

The last plan is all about the new academic year. The aim of this plan is to alleviate the worries your pupils may have for upcoming changes in the next academic year. This is especially crucial for pupils who are due to go through major changes such as going from primary to secondary school. Work with your pupil to set goals for their first few weeks of school, write down any concerns they have and work to tackle each concern by making suggestions for ways they can cope with those (e.g. worries about making new friends).

Finishing school for the year can be a fun and exciting time for some pupils while for others it can be scary and worrisome. By working with your pupil on how to conquer their fears, you can help them find fun and excitement for the months ahead.
