How to advance your career through apprenticeships

In today’s oversaturated job market, it’s hard to stand out at entry level positions. The need for having both experience and knowledge makes it more and more difficult for new talent to enter the market, making job search a difficult journey. However, there is a way to get an edge over the competition by getting both experience and knowledge and that edge is: apprenticeships.

What are apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes that combine practical on-the-job experience with structured learning. They enable employees to gain new skills while working.

They are available across various industries and provide a great way for new talent to enter the market or for existing employees to use as a way to develop in their career.

Who can do an apprenticeship?

Anyone in England aged 16 years old and above, whether employed, unemployed or leaving school can do an apprenticeship. There is no upper age limit to do an apprenticeship.

To be eligible for an apprenticeship, you need to hold a GCSE C/4 or equivalent in maths and English.  For level 3 apprenticeships and above, where these are not held Functional Skills Level 2 (maths and English) can be embedded into the programme.

For level 2 apprenticeships, a lower threshold applies.

You must have lived in the UK for 3+ years minimum and a valid form of UK ID You can hold a higher-level qualification, such as an A Level or a degree, but you must not have prior learning within the apprenticeship’s area of stud

The benefits of apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are a fantastic way for people to jump start their career. The benefits of apprenticeships include:

Earn while you learn

In an apprenticeship programme, apprentices benefit from working and earning a wage while they study for a qualification. Not only does this provide apprentices with a wage, but it also helps them gain valuable hands-on experience giving them a CV advantage.

Government funded training

Apprenticeship training is fully funded for the apprentice through the English Government, allowing learners to gain a theoretical knowledge and qualification without going into debt.

Progression pathways

Apprenticeships are available in several levels so apprentices can move up through the levels as an apprentice, gaining more knowledge and experience as they go.
