Teaching Assistant Michelle develops career in teaching through apprenticeship
Apprenticeships offer great flexibility for learners, allowing them to learn while working and earning a wage. An Inspire ATA apprentice who has made the most of this benefit of apprenticeships is Michelle Banda, a Level 3 Teaching Assistant apprentice from Gosforth Junior high. Here is her story:
“I chose this apprenticeship programme as it highlighted the skills I wanted to develop, and it was a great pathway towards eventually getting a teaching degree.
As a single mum the apprenticeship route was the most ideal so that I’m both in employment but also getting a qualification at the same time. It helped me achieve what I needed without putting me in a difficult financial situation.
The main benefits of an apprenticeship programme are gaining amazing skills and achieving a qualification all while getting hands on practical experience.
I most proud of the fact that I have been able to independently lead nurture groups for young children and have been able to see them progress in their emotional wellbeing. Knowing that I am making a difference in children’s lives had been the best thing about my job.
The most important skill I’ve developed is confidence - when working in the school environment you must be confident in.
I have been given an amazing tutor who is very supportive and teaches in a way that positively impacts my learning. The staff that I am working with are very attentive and are always there to answer any questions I have!
After completing my apprenticeship, I may do my level 4 to become a HLTA or complete my degree and go on to be a primary school teacher.”
Well done, Anna, best of luck in the future!
