Apprentice Barbra starts a career in teaching through Level 3 Teaching Assistant programme

Doing an apprenticeship is a fantastic way to enter a new career path through hands on experience and formal education. An Inspire ATA apprentice who has made the most of this feature of apprenticeships is Barbara Losito, who works as a Level 3 Teaching Assistant apprentice at Freemantles school. Here is her story:

“After raising my children and working in different roles, I realised how much I enjoyed helping children learn and grow. I had always been interested in education and wanted to do something meaningful where I could make a difference every day. The Teaching Assistant apprenticeship gave me the perfect opportunity to retrain and develop a new career that truly reflects my values. Working with children, especially those who need extra support, has always felt deeply rewarding, and this programme allowed me to follow that passion while learning in a practical way.

As someone returning to education later in life, the apprenticeship route felt right for me. It allowed me to learn by working hands-on in the classroom, while studying the theory behind my work. I preferred this hands-on approach compared to sitting in lectures because it built my confidence and let me see my progress every day. It also offered flexibility, a supportive environment and the chance to earn while learning, which made it more accessible for this stage of life.

An apprenticeship lets you learn, grow and contribute at the same time. You’re not just reading about ideas; you’re applying them directly in real situations. Another benefit is the personal growth and teamwork skills that come from working with experienced colleagues and mentors. For me, it was also a great opportunity to build confidence and find my place in a caring profession.

I am proud of how much I have grown, both professionally and personally. When I started, I was nervous about my English and whether I could adapt after so many years away from study. But I proved to myself that determination and passion can lead to great results. I am most proud of forming meaningful relationships with pupils and seeing their progress. Supporting a child to reach a goal, communicate more confidently or feel understood has been the most rewarding achievement of all.

The best part of my role is seeing the small moments of progress that mean so much, a smile, a word spoken for the first time, or a child feeling proud of their own work. Every day is different, and I love being part of a team that supports pupils to reach their potential. Knowing that my presence can make a child’s school day a little easier or happier gives me a real sense of purpose.

The most important skill I’ve learned is effective communication. Working with children, especially those with additional needs or language challenges, has taught me how to listen carefully, use clear and kind language, and adapt my style to each pupil. Good communication builds trust and helps children feel understood, which is the foundation for learning and emotional wellbeing. It’s also a skill I will continue to use in every part of my life.

Through my role, I have helped create a calmer, more supportive learning environment where pupils feel listened to and encouraged. I have built trusting relationships with students who need consistency and patience, and I have supported them in achieving personal and academic goals. My work has contributed to improved confidence, communication, and engagement for several children. I also feel that my positive attitude and teamwork have added to the caring atmosphere of the school community.

Throughout my apprenticeship, I’ve felt exceptionally well supported by both Inspire ATA and my school team. Inspire ATA offered excellent guidance, regular check-ins, and consistent encouragement at every stage of the programme. My tutor, Kymberley, was patient, approachable, and understanding, always willing to answer my questions and provide thoughtful guidance. Within my school, my mentors and colleagues were fantastic, they introduced me to effective strategies, offered constructive feedback, and made me feel like a valued member of the team. Their support has helped me develop greater confidence and enhance my professional skills.

Now that I have completed my Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, I would like to continue working in education and build on my experience in special needs support. My goal is to become a specialist in communication or autism support, helping pupils reach their full potential and feel included in every part of school life.”

Well done, Barbara, best of luck in the future!
