Autism Support Practitioner Level 5

This 18 month work-based trainning programme is designed for teaching assistants and support staff who want to develop specialist expertise in autism and play a more impactful role in supporting autistic pupils’ learning, participation and outcomes. Built on the Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant standard, the programme combines evidence-informed strategies with a deeper understanding of autism, sensory processing, communication differences and behaviour as communication.

Supporting school staff in
developing inclusive education

The Autism Support Practitioner Apprenticeship supports teaching assistants and support staff to become specialists in autism practice.

Apprentices will learn how to understand and respond effectively to the needs of autistic pupils, remove barriers to learning and enable meaningful participation and inclusion.

Autism Support Practitioners can work in primary, secondary, special schools, alternative provision, further education institutions such as sixth forms and colleges.

Support autistic pupils to access learning and participate fully in educational activities.
Understand and respond effectively to the individual needs of autistic pupils.
Adapt learning environments to reduce barriers and promote inclusion.
Implement evidence-informed strategies to support communication, sensory and social needs.
Plan and deliver structured interventions that improve pupil outcomes.

Monitor pupil progress and evaluate the impact of support strategies.
Collaborate with teachers, families and external professionals to meet pupil needs.
Promote positive behaviour by recognising behaviour as a form of communication.
Personalise support approaches to meet individual learning, communication and sensory needs.
Contribute to inclusive practice across the school to improve outcomes for autistic pupils.
